Our population has now reached 27.6 million, after adding another 420,000 people, or growing 1.5%, in the year to June, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics. So how do we compare to the rest of the world?
By population size, Australia ranks 54th globally, although our population is growing faster than the global average (which is 1.0%).
In fact, Australia’s growth rate is high by the standards of advanced economies, many of which are grappling with ageing populations and much slower growth.
Migration currently accounts for 73% of Australia’s population increase, helping to expand the labour force and support economic activity. At the same time, faster growth is adding to pressures on housing, infrastructure and public services.
